Fighting Fears and Transcending ‘What IFS’
Its dark outside, you’re home alone, the house is quiet other than the sound of the TV and the dog snoring. You see it and hear it at the same time:
The front door is suddenly thrown open against the door frame – WHOOSH BANG!!
The dog starts barking.
Your breathing gets faster.
Your heart starts racing.
You become tense.
A split second later you KNOW it’s the wind
No one is trying to get into your home.
For a split second, you were so afraid that you reacted as if your life was in danger, your body initiating the flight or fight response.
But really, there was no danger at all.
Experiencing fear every now and then is a normal part of life. But living with chronic fear can be both physically and emotionally debilitating.
